Instructions for Post-Cosmetic Tattoo Care

After your cosmetic or paramedical tattoo, you are required to follow these aftercare instructions, for the best healing outcome for your tattoo. In addition, there are more specific notes related to each type of tattoo.

All Tattoo’s see below:

  • Do not immerse your tattoo in water for 5 days
  • Do not get make up or skincare on or near your tattoo for 5 days
  • Do not touch your tattoo with your fingers for 5 days
  • Avoid sweating for 5 days
  • Your tattoo will weep for the first 24 – 48 hours (you need to wipe to avoid crusting with damp cotton rounds)
  • Your tattoo will go much darker within the first 24 hours – this is temporary
  • You may get a headache the day of your treatment, you can take Panadol
  • Your tattoo can fade up to 80% by the end of the first week, some colour comes back by week 3
  • Your tattoo may become very itchy as it heals, avoid scratching, this is normal
  • Your tattoo may be or become uneven and gappy by the end of the first week, you can use make up at this stage, until the touch up (from day 6)
  • Remember this is a 2 stage process, the adjustment session will correct shape, thickness, gaps, colour, depth, length, fullness and balance

 

Brows:

  • Gently and quickly clean your brows with a damp/wet cotton round every few hours for the first 24 – 48 hours to clean any dirt or crusting away, dry immediately to avoid prolonged water on them
  • Apply Medicone Gel morning and night for 5 days with a cotton tip
  • Do not pick your tattoo, your tattoo will lose all colour if you pick or scratch the scab away
  • Your tattoo may shrink approx 2mm within 3 – 5 days

 

Eyeliner:

  • No aftercare gel is required – dry heal
  • Your lids may swell within the first 24 hours, you may take an antihistamine
  • Use eye drops given on first night and next morning
  • Dab with cold damp compress on first night for comfort

 

Lips:

  • No spicy or acidic food for 48 hours and drink through a straw
  • Gently dab lips with with a damp cotton round every few hours for the first 24 hours
  • Your lips may swell within the first 24 hours, you may take an antihistamine
  • If you are prone to cold sores, it is recommended to take cold sore tablets (Famvir or Valtrex)
  • Use Medicone Gel as often as you like

 

Areola / Scars:

  • Do not remove nipple covers for 5 days (applied by tattooist)
  • After the 5th day, gently wash with soap and water and apply Medicone Gel morning and night for 7 days
  • If dressing falls off sooner than 5 days, apply Medicone Gel and put cling wrap over area

 

SMP:

  • For the first 5 days you should avoid heavy sweating, rigorous exercise or saunas – the intense sweating that often occurs following the hair tattoo treatment could interrupt the healing process
  • Avoid exfoliating, shampooing and getting the scalp wet – the act of scrubbing the scalp tattoo can be very harsh on your skin and open wounds
  • Avoid shaving – it is important to avoid shaving and irritating the area while it’s healing
  • No sunburn or exposure to sunlight – the sun is a powerful source of UV rays that can lead to premature fading and damage to your scalp pigment, you can wear a hat to help protect your scalp
  • No touching your scalp with your hands – you could introduce bacteria and increase the risk of infection
  • From day 5 onwards you can now wash hair gently and pat dry
  • You can start doing light exercise, but refrain from anything intense that will cause excessive sweating
  • Protect your scalp by wearing a hat and using SPF
  • You can shave your hair using an electric razor
  • Moisturise scalp daily if needed, with a small amount of coconut oil
  • You may find that some minor scabbing is occurring after the treatment, this is normal, don’t pick at them, let them fall off on their own
  • Avoid saunas, chlorine pools, beach or salt water for at least 4 – 6 weeks

 

I am aware that I cannot donate blood within 1 week of my treatment (as per new laws for health department registered premises).
